Win 2022 BDA Industry Excellence Award

Building a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future for everyone is a central tenet of WJ Groundwater’s ethos. In November 2022, our commitment to a greener future was recognised when the company won a major award at the British Drilling Association’s Annual Awards (BDA). The company won the first-place accolade in the Industry Excellence Award category for our Commachio MC6 plug-in electric drilling rig. The judges were impressed by the benefits that such emissions-free machinery can bring to a project, for its operators and wider society in reducing the carbon footprint of drilling activities.

Stuart Ward, WJ’s Drilling Manager, received the award from Paul McMann, BDA Chair, and Alfie Moore, the evening’s celebrity compere. Richard Fielden, WJ Groundwater’s CEO, said, “We are really pleased to receive this award. Going fully electric was a bold move in our sector and requires much more pre-planning and collaboration with our clients to organise and distribute mains electricity, but the benefits are apparent, and they bring substantial cost savings.”

The MC6 is implemented during underground drilling projects where a lack of diesel fumes is seen as a major advantage over petrol-powered rigs. You can learn more about the MC6 and WJ’s other electric plant, which forms part of a move towards net-zero CO2 emissions and the company’s future commitments to using renewable energy and electric over fossil fuels, by reading our guide, ‘Going Electric.’

Make sustainability the foundation of your next project.
